Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
